June for me has always been the languid, unending heart of summer — a month you sip slowly and cup in your hands like a batch of blueberries.  But this year, I don’t know where my June has gone.  I somehow managed to take four business trips, cooking for two Comedy Kitchen shows, celebrate both the S.O.’s and my birthday, and celebrate our anniversary.  But between all of those goings-on, I’ve barely been able to spend a day in the kitchen for The Otium.

So when I finally found the time to treat myself to a day of cooking, I also decided to treat myself to something decadent.  And to me, “decadent” means rich, thick, unctuous, unapologetic cream.  And there’s no better way to showcase a good cream than a panna cotta. (more…)

Blueberry, Coconut, & Brown Rice Breakfast Pudding with Almond Crisp

We can probably all agree that there’s no better way to start the day than with a clean, nutritious breakfast.  But if you’re anything like me, the snooze button is far more tempting than scrambling eggs.  So I typically end up pulling on yesterday’s jeans, running out the door, and choking down an old protein bar with just a few minutes to spare before my first meeting of the morning.

Definitely not an optimal way to start the day.

I had a palm reading my senior year of high school.  The only thing I remember the palmist saying was that I am quick to fall deeply, fanatically, in love.  For years, I refused to believe her.  I wanted to think I was even-keel, rational, and not prone to reckless infatuations.

But ten years later, upon plucking my first mason jar out of a cauldron of boiling water, and hearing it ping! shut, all bets were off.  I was head-over-heels, deliriously, ravenously, in love with canning. (more…)

When the S.O. and I got married nearly six years ago [gah, how time has flown!], we made a pact to do something new together once a month so that we’d never get bored.  And while this little pact may seem silly — I think I read it in some vacuous bridal periodical while waiting for a dress fitting — it has actually kept us from falling into a rut.  So I’ve decided to extend a similar try-something-new philosophy to this blog.
